Paul Harguss was born to Karl and Schelma Harguss near the Vaegir village of Fisdnar. Karl was the Patriarch of Clan Harguss, one of the more ancient houses in the Kingdom of Vaegirs. Paul would spend much of his youth roaming the forest searching for game to hunt. His first bow was given to him at the age of three. Although he struggled to pull the string back at first, he eventually did even after being ridiculed by his older brothers Scen and Alka. A lone hare wandering the forest was his first kill at the age of five.
During his teenage years, the political situation turned dire in the Kingdom of Vaegirs. Khergit raiders moved into Vaegir territory near Khudan and Reyvadin; seizing the villages of Hanun, Ulburban, and Tebranda. The Massacre of Dramug also occured during this time period. In which the Vaegirs lost ten thousand soldiers and camp followers whereas the Khergits only lost 739 horsemen. King Yaroglek sued for peace shortly after. Sensing the weakness of the Vaegirs, the Nords declared war and managed to seize the capital of Reyvadin after a long and bloody siege that lasted 26 months. Paul's father Karl led a separatists' group to cede from Yaroglek. Upon hearing this Yaroglek invited the group to the city of Rivacheg to discuss peace and stop the rebellion. Once the group arrived at the palace, archers opened fire and killed all those who opposed Yaroglek. The surviving members of Clan Harguss were expelled.
After being expelled, Paul wandered from village to village seeking employment. A crippling sadness gripped Paul and he sought comfort in alcohol and women of the night. His longest stint was in the salt mines near the Swadian town of Dhirim, which lasted three years. He worked by day and spent his wages on drinks during the night. After getting a local maiden with child, Paul left to join a Vaegir expedition heading to Laras. There he met Enzo Orsini and became good friends. Serving as an archer and instructor to recruits. Paul dreams of returning to the Kingdom of Vaegirs and seek retribution for his family.
