Background/History:
Born in Shariz, Roland's parents were travelling merchants that made their rounds in the southern kingdoms, and would spend the Calradian winters in the coastal towns of the Sultanate. Roland was born while his parents were trading in Shariz. He spent his childhood in the streets of the capital city, befriending the children of the other merchants, friendships that were always temporary.
When he was 10 his parents told him they planned to move back to their homeland in the mountainous valleys of the Rhodoks Kingdom. They spent the better part of the year travelling to Jelkala, and they arrived to find Roland's parents relatives had all either fled the lands, or had died. They left a hefty debt though, and the king saw it fit to find Roland's family responsible for the debt. His parents gave up the merchant business and resorted to labor jobs in the city, chipping away at the debt ever so slowly, even with Roland's help.
During a particularly bad spring, a quarter of the city was stricken dead by a flu, Roland's mother being one of them. With death and sickness came some salvation though, as the city officials saw little reason to focus any resources on attaining this debt, and Roland and his father were absolved. Within a week they had left the city. For the next couple years they stuck to coastal towns along the Rhodok coast, Roland's father got a job as a fisherman, as he felt his experience as a merchant helped with this profession.
Roland spent his days either working, or spending time with street gangs. Harassment and assault were never his thing, but Roland found comfort in vandalizing city property. This resulted in many nights in the town jail of course.
Eventually, one year, Roland's father and his ship crew were lost to a particularly bad storm. Roland had just turned 20. With what was left of his fathers money he bought onto a ship and sailed south for a few years, exploring lesser known parts of the world. He kept journals on his travels, addressing them to his parents, telling them about the locals and customs of all the towns he visited, each one uniquely different. Far from all the wars between kingdoms of Calradia.
Once he turned 25 he thought he would head back to Calradia, his travelling had brought him to almost every known port in the world. He had amassed a stack of journals, and planned to turn them into a book of some sort. He returned to the capital of Jelkala at the tail end of a war against Swadia. The city had been destroyed in a recent siege, most of the garrison scattered to the wilderness and the king nowhere to be found. He joined up with some mercenaries and skilled swordsmen to clear the city of looters, since there were no soldiers to do it themselves. He didnt kill anyone that day, but he found exhilaration in fighting, and scaring these people off. It needed to be done so the people of the city could go on with their lives while the kings and lords do their fighting.
He sold his journals to a local scribe, bought a sword and armor and joined up with the rhodok military. In 3 years time he was leading his own men into battles against mountain gangs, pirates, and the occasional Swadian knight. His force acted as a peacekeeping patrol of the mountain and coastal region, giving Roland the best position to help smaller villages with their troubles.
Eventually Roland's men were called into larger battles against the always impending threat of Swadia. He lost many of the men he'd known through all of his military life. Disillusioned and mad at himself for thinking him and his men would be valued by the kingdom, he fled, telling the last of his men to do the same. He headed for the deserts of the south, he headed for Shariz.
As a sword for hire Roland crossed the Sarranid deserts dozens of times, he traveled with trade caravans that took him all over Calradia, forcing him to come to blows with Khergit horsemen and Nordic raiders. Roland achieved some status as an excellent swordsmen during these years. Some tales say he cut down 3 charging Khergit lancemen, others tell of him taking down a fully armored Swadian knight with only his boiled leather armor, and a flanged mace. No matter the stories, Roland was a good fighter.
His favorite jobs took him over, or close to the sea. Reminding him of his youth and his father, he always found it more enjoyable to fight with the wide ocean in view. When not on a job Roland spent his time looking over historic and worldly texts in the libraries of the cities he stayed in. He always found it interesting to read about the places he traveled to across the seas. He longed to go to those places someday. But his admittedly short time in the military was not kind to him, and he found each travelling job to be that much harder on his body. He took every job he was offered regardless.
